In Reply to: Minolta Maxxum Zoom Lenses posted by Rene Moisson on January 28, 2000 at 15:24:49:
: My wife has an older Minolta Maxxum camera and a 70-210 AF Zoom lens. For her birthday she has asked for a larger (more magnification) zoom lens. I know nothing about zoom lenses. Can someone give me some advise. Thanks
Rene,
Zoom lenses with focal lengths longer than 210mm are not mass market items so the price rises. Minolta does indeed make longer focal length zoom lenses, including the following focal lengths and more 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 ** 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 ** 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 APO (apochromatic is better and more $$) ** 100-400mm f/4.5-6.7 APO, and also the G series of lenses designed for professional expectations (non zoom, single focal length lenses with faster maximum aperture openings and better glass.)
What you really need to do is spoil the surprise and ask your wife to determine more precisely what additional focal length would meet her needs and also for her to consider what maximum aperture she needs (the smaller the maximum aperture, the less useful the lens is in dim light unless a tripod is being used.)
Go to Minolta USA's web site and study all the choices. Lenses are under "accessories" in the consumer products section. The hyperlink is below.
One thing I would not do. I would not consider buying a used
autofocus lens (because of the electronic nature of autofocus
lenses) and I would be reluctant to buy an aftermarket autofocus
lens made by another company to fit the Minolta Maxxum. If
there's a Minolta dealer in your area, that would also be a great
source of information and possible lens purchase.
