: I would appreciate feedback from those of you who own this camera. I cannot find one in the city where I live, but from the specs & price info I have received, I would like to consider it for my first SLR. Thank you.

Marilyn,
You hit the nail on the head when you said that you can't find one in your city. I have never seen one either! I did look up the specs on the camera and it looks like a solid performer. I liked that 1/4000th flash synch using the Sigma dedicated flash unit. The lens mount is Signa AF only so that means that the only brand of lens you will ever find will be Sigma (I assume). I doubt that another company, lets say Tokina, will make a lens in a Sigma Af mount.

The variable here is that nobody can vouch for the cameras reliabilty or ease of use. And you will have to keep in mind that anything you buy will most likely have to come from Sigma, lenses, flashes, any type of dedicated item.

Hopefully, someone else will step in and add some more info for you to assist with your decision.

Heck, Why don't you E-mail Sigma, tell them your situation, tell them that you don't want to buy something you can't see and hold first ... Sigma may send you one to try ...... it's a thought. Big companies do funny things sometimes. Who knows, you may end up in one of their ads.

Good idea...

and on your suggestion I called tech services again (I called before I posted here)and explained my concerns. Their only suggestion was to order it and return it if I found it unsuitable as they don't have a "loaner" program. They were very nice about it but I just would like to work with this camera before buying. I'm fine with the Sigma lens and accessories. This purchase will be my backup camera if I really want to get into photography as a serious hobby. Thanks!

I own an SA-5, having bought it because it was highly recommended by Pop Photography, and also because the dealer offered a tremendous deal. I am an amateur photographer, and for my needs, the SA-5 has performed more than adequately. If you are starting out and need a camera thats easy to use, I'd definitely suggest the SA-5. Good luck.
