I know of no freeware or shareware slide captioning program.
The most used program is Cradoc Caption Writer available from Perfect Niche Software http://www.perfectniche.com/ for $69.95.
There's also Rosette Software's Agave SPS (Stock Photography Solution) available from http://www.prenticephoto.com/Agaveweb.htm for $595.
