: I have an old Canon EF camera and have not so long ago discovered some discrepancies in the focus system. When I focus through a viewfinder on an object which is (according to my eyes) 5m away, I read on the lens distance scale that the object is 10m away (sometimes infinity). I need advise of someone more experienced with photography: do I have to be guided only by the viewfinder and not by the lense distance scale in this case? Or should I disregard focusing through a viewfinder and use lens's distance scale guided by my eyes' estimation?

: Thank you.

Hi:
I visited your site, learned about your current engagement and noticed your age range. As a consequence I have sufficient data to suppose you do have a good if not very good eyesight.
I would trust it for the time being and chech on the results in the film. There is a chance that the lens barrel has become loose from the distance reading ring and it now gives false readings; however, if the film gets what you see you should have no problem in the pictures.
If such a distance ring becomes looser it would have to be attended by a repairman before it interferes with your focusing.
Have a great time.
