Doug's advice is very sound. Paul's is good advice also.
But, let me tell two things:
1.- My best natural light portraits were with natural light from
a window. No fill-ins, no artificial anything, inluding makeup.
2.- The best reflecting item for light to iluminate very dark
shadows was a newspaper.
