Hi Amy,
My advice would be to get a 35mm compact. I was trying to decide between 35mm and APS a few months ago when I was looking to buy a new compact myself, prompted by the fact that my Canon A1, zoom and flashgun are too bulky to take everywhere, and my old Canon compact had a fixed length lens. After researching things pretty thoroughly, I stuck with 35mm because I wasn't keen on the potential loss of quality from the reduced APS negative size nor any of the three viewing formats.
What I bought in the end was a 35mm Olympus Mju Zoom 140. Unlike some other compacts, this one doesn't allow you to set shutter or aperture preference, but you can set spot metering. It also has a very versatile flash, and I would say the strobe red-eye reduction mode seems to be quite effective. For a 35mm compact, it is also particularly, well... compact! The lens retracts completely when the camera's off, making it very easy to slip into a pocket. I have to say this is an excellent little camera and I would definitely recommend it. For me it has pretty much become the only camera I need.
Regards,
Simon
