Thanks for reminding me about the GOKO Macromax, which focuses down to 4.3". Although I don't own one, it will undoubtedly do the job, although it is an APS camera (I understand that GOKO also makes a 35mm model that does focus down to 12"). Unfortunately, this is a bit too specialized for my students (I teach a Flower & Garden Photography course, for P&S camera owners).

My problem is that I can't myself evaluate every P&S camera, although I do as many as I can at the local camera stores (Cincinnati, Ohio area). I have lately been looking at the Minolta Supreme EX, which will autofocus at 1/3 magnification (17.7") and will probably recommend this to my students if nothing better is suggested.

In response to my query, a question was raised regarding parallax. This is no problem for my students. I merely have them photograph - camera on a tripod - a card (which I made up in a vector drawing program) containing a sort of bullseye with vertical and horizontal lines, using the parallax markings of their own particular camera. Since it has been my experience that these markings are frequently wishful thinking on the part of the manufacturer, they learn how much adjustment is needed from this starting point. This is done at several measured closeup distances since the adjustment will vary with the distance. (My students are also urged learn to RTFM so they know what the minimum focusing distance is for their particular camera!).

Again, any further suggestions will be appreciated.
