Ryan,
Despite all the hype to the contrary, the bottom line is no $600
digital camera or even $1000 digital camera is going to give you
high quality 8-1/2x11 cover photos you say are needed. To get
that kind of quality from a digital camera you'd have to join the
ranks of the pros, and they are spending $25,000 for a digital
camera back from companies like MegaVision, Dicomed, Jenoptik,
Phase One (and other names you have probably also never heard
of.)
Yes, there are some wonderful consumer model digital cameras coming to the marketplace which produce highly detailed digital images (look at the recent 2 megapixel cameras from Nikon and Olympus) but getting quality 8x10 prints from any of the consumer digital cameras is really pushing the limits. 5x7 is more like it. The digital camera market is the most volatile photo equipment category I have ever seen, with more than 30 companies introducing new models almost weekly. Wait a few years until the marketplace settles down. Many companies will drop out of the race in the interim.
Maybe you can find a benefactor willing to donate a 2 megapixel digital camera to the school. It would certainly be useful for web applications and smaller photos.
