Just a guess here, but try pulling up on the film rewind knob. You may encounter a slight spring-like resistance, continue pulling the film rewind knob a bit further and the back should spring open. Most modern 35mm cameras open this way. (Some also have a button which must be pushed in at the same time you pull the rewind knob out - this is a safety feature to prevent accidental opening of the camera back.) Before opening the camera, make sure there is no film in the camera otherwise you will ruin the last photos taken by your dad.
