: John Schaffer answered my question (very promptly, too!) on
the quality of a Kalimar lens. Thanks John!
: Now I have a question as to the quality of a Samyang lens. I am
not a professional, I am only interested in using a 500mm lens
for very specific photos on rare ocassions.
: So is this a "good" lens or a "poor" one.
: Thanks!
Samyang lenses are made in Korea.
The Korean lens manufacturing industry is not as well developed as optics fabrication in other countries. In general, lenses made in Korea are not as highly regarded as lenses manufactured in Japan or Germany. A Korean made lens may be totally adequate for use by the occasional weekend photographer. I would be reluctant to recommend buying one if it were going to be subject to constant or professional use.
As to your specific question about 500mm catadioptric lenses (mirror lenses), I doubt there would be much difference between the Kalimar or Samyang brands. In fact, if the Kalimar and Samyang brands look exactly alike, both may be manufactured by Samyang Optical Industrial Company Ltd. Phoenix branded lenses are also made by Samyang.
