BetterPhoto.com Redmond, Washington BetterPhoto.com teaches photographers how to make better photos. The site features great tips to improve photographic technique, camera comparisons, book reviews, a useful Q&A section, and help with all aspects of digital imaging. We also publish two weekly newsletters: a text-based news email and a photo-enhanced instructional workshop.

Black & White World New York, N.Y. Expanding online resource for black and white photography, including a monthly Top 10 for B&W sites (with lists back to November 1995), multiple discussion groups, extensive darkroom tutorials and FAQ's, and many links to related sites.

Blind Spot Magazine New York, N.Y. Online version of printed journal of contemporary photography. Previously unpublished images by famous photographers appear with work by young and unknown artists of tomorrow. Discussions between artists and new fiction by recognized writers. C: The Speed of Light Staten Island, N.Y. Web home for internationally recognized photography writer and critic A.D. Coleman. His columns appear regularly in the New York Observer, Photo Metro, Lens Work Quarterly, The Photo Review, Cover: The Underground National, and five European magazines.

CameraArts Sacramento, California. A new bi-monthly periodical from the publishers of View Camera magazine, "dedicated to the art and craft of small and medium format photography." Detailed information about first issue and subscription information. Photography workshop calendar.

Communication Arts Palo Alto, California. Offers a broader perspective than photography alone, encompassing all aspects of communication and design -- including techniques, tools, typography, creative and production resources and more. Subscription information. Stellar exhibits in advertising and graphic design.

Critical Eye Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Essays and photographs focused on specific topics suggested by editor Greg Rubin. Nicely done "links" to selected photographers uses images to whet your interest. Effective layout enhances this "labor of love."

Design & Publishing Center Harrisonburg, Virginia. Home to three monthly web publications DT&G (Design, Type & Graphics), Web Design & Review, and PhotoShop Tips and Tricks and much more. Navigating can be a little confusing because it's not linear or hierarchy structured. It's r-a-d-i-a-l! There's a lot of free stuff (visit the warehouse), opinionated articles by the publisher and tons of solid content to keep you coming back again and again.

DoubleTake Durham, North Carolina. Features photography, essays, poetry and more; published by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Elevates documentary photography to an art form. A generous selection of content from the current issue and all past issues. Subscription information.

Endzone San Francisco, California. Extensive top notch action photos of the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers, photo essay of NFL quarterbacks and more. Eye Caramba Magazine Minneapolis, Minnesota. Eye Caramba is an online quarterly magazine featuring fine art photography and creative writing. Edited by Gordon Stettinius. Submissions are encouraged. Comprehensive contents and professional design.

F2 - Women In Photography International Seattle, Washington Founded in 1981, Women In Photography International is a nonprofit educational organization promoting the visibility of women photographers and their work through exhibitions, programs and publications. Online bimonthly news magazine, F2, contains historical profiles, book reviews, marketing tips and job listings.

FocalPoint f/8 San Francisco, California. Encouraging "development of photo and multimedia journalism on the World Wide Web." Current projects feature excellent photojournalism. Online auction of images supports this project. Collectors should consider the quality art photography; the minimum bids are very reasonable. Beneath the "Auctions" format you will find portfolios for each photographer.

Grafica Obscura Mountain View, California. Not a magazine per se but an evolving collection of eclectic articles by Paul Haeberli, a computer graphics researcher at Silicon Graphics. Check out Haeberli's Collection of Digital Images and his demonstration of Synthetic Lighting for Photography.

LensWork Anacortes, Washington. Dedicated to photography and the creative process, LensWork publishes six times a year and features articles, interviews and portfolios on photography and the creative process. The LensWork website features an online gallery, hundreds of audio clips, back issues information, special editions and photogravure images. Subscription information, back issues available, and more.

Leonardo On Line San Francisco, California. Online version of MIT's print journal Leonardo. An eclectic collection of articles on the esthetics and technology of art. While a bit deep and abstract for the average reader, the Gallery features current and past exhibits of cutting-edge imagery.

Mythago Savannah, Georgia. Ever-changing collection of photography and art. Photo articles and artistic nudes, landscapes, and experimental photographs.

National Geographic Washington, D.C. Two visits to this site revealed a complex document hierarchy as the Society attempts to tell its whole story and perhaps includes too much. For photographs, stick with with the "Features" and "Media" areas. Online forums, NGS store, and more.

Nature Photographer Magazine Quincy, Massachusetts. Full-color glossy bi-monthly magazine published by well-known photographer and writer Helen Longest-Slaughter. Articles, images and subscription information. Some Nature Photographer articles appear online in Apogee Magazine.

New York Institute of Photography New York, N.Y. While not a photography magazine per se, you'll find more good information here than in many printed and online publications; monthly picture-taking topics, tips, excellent digital photography primer, seasonal ideas, quarterly contests, and more. Photo District News New York, N.Y. Online version of the magazine for professionals. Site has grown wonderfully over the last year; top notch portfolios, "Legends Online," PDN Newswire lets you select from menu of recent articles, stock photography section, worldwide calendar of events and much more.

PEI (Photo Electronic Imaging) Atlanta, Georgia. Excellent online version of the printed publication. Extensive selection of article from past issues, large library of tutorials, recommended video tapes and books, HTML color calculator and color charts, subscription information and more. First class site.

PhotoLink Gallery Davenport, Iowa. Daniel Leighton's conceptual 3-D web site with nearly 2,000 in-house photographs and mixed media images. Imagine a treasure hunt in an art gallery! Navigation relies on image maps. Each room features an exhibit by a different artist. Includes tasteful images of the human form. (Hint: some links which prove to be dead ends may be useful the second time around.)

Sensuous Line Conifer, Colorado. "The Journal of Fine Art Figure Photographers, Collectors, and Models." Published by Apogee Photo. This is a subscription web site, however two free issues are available for viewing. The forum is also open to the public. (If I pretended to be a search engine robot, could I sneak past the front door?)

Shots Dallas, Texas. Quarterly member-supported journal of black and white photography.11th year of publication. Clean unpretentious layout features images from the current and previous issue. "Shots Show" is a collection of images from issues over the years. Subscription and submission information. Visit the host The Afterimage Gallery for more superb photographs.

Sight St. Charles, Missouri. Award winning monthly online photography magazine. Growing collection of photo adventures accompanied by narratives. "Portfolios" showcase the first-rate work of more than 15 talented photographers. Read the Editor's Journal ("Departments") for thought-provoking observation.

The Photo Review Langhorne, Pennsylvania. Photo-illustrated excerpts from quarterly journal, now celebrating its 20th year of publication. Features the work of socially conscious photographers. Subscription information. Selected images under "Pictorial Exhibition."

Time Life Pictures New York, N.Y. The emphasis is on Time Inc.'s picture collection of 20 million images. Showcases a featured photo each week, the Gallery has several exhibits, photo essays are offered on a range of topics, and viewers may submit requests for images they'd like to see. Excellent archive.

Urban Desires New York, N.Y. Not a photography magazine but "a cultural oasis for weary internet travelers" and we agree. For photography, select Art and Past Issues for a menu of articles on artists and photographers. The adventurous can select from topics or dive into past issues. Incredibly well-designed.

View Camera Magazine Sacramento, California. Published by Camera Arts, this bi-monthly full color printed publication contains portfolios, interviews, equipment and product reviews and much more. Web site offers selected past articles, classifieds, upcoming features, and subscription information.

Zone Zero Los Angeles, California. "From analog to digital photography." Spanish and English. Social/political documentary photography with a focus (but not entirely) on Latin America. "Exhibitions" feature images and text from more than sixty photographers, including Joel-Peter Witkin, Lucien Clergue, and many highly talented but unknown artists. First class site.
