Information About Camera Clubs

Clubs Provide Motivation
It can be difficult pursuing a photographic hobby by yourself. Joining a local camera club is a great way to improve your photographic skills and have fun at the same time. You'll meet people with similar interests, and club activities will encourage you to take pictures. Some of the finest amateur photographers belong to camera clubs.

Each Club is Unique
There is no such thing as a typical camera club! While most groups have a generalist approach to photography, some clubs concentrate on only one topic, such as nature and wildlife photography, stereo pictures, digital imaging, etc. Some groups are highly competitive while others are more laid back. You'll find varying skill levels in all clubs.

Many camera clubs have monthly slide and print competitions, based on a photo theme assigned at the previous meeting. Usually members work with both prints and slides, however some clubs are slides only groups and some are prints only. Typical programs can include talks and presentations from outside guests, seminars, workshops, field trips, summer picnics and annual potluck dinners.

Finding the Right Club
When a club is affiliated with regional or national societies (like the PSA or the Canadian Association for Photographic Art), members' images can end up in local, national and international competitions. However, many fine camera clubs have no outside affiliations.

There are camera clubs in most communities and countries around the world. Major metropolitan areas often have several clubs from which to choose. Most camera clubs meet monthly, some meet twice a month and some don't meet during the summer months.

To find a club in your town, first ask at your local camera store or public library. You'll find clubs, locations, meeting times and contact phone numbers on web sites for regional camera club organizations and national photographic societies. Guests are usually welcome to attend a few meetings before deciding whether to join. Most clubs have modest annual dues.
