How it works: Standard-sized photos from digital cameras will be printed on traditional photographic paper, not using a consumer "photo quality" inkjet printer. Poster-sized prints will be printed with a commercial wide-format inkjet printer, generally using archival inks. Many (but not all) online photo finishing services require you to download and install proprietary software which facilitates uploading of digital images and sends your instructions for print sizes and quantities, your mailing address and billing information. While some software will let you chose from several participating photo labs, most are specific to one photo lab. Some offer versions for both Macs and PCs, others provide PC software only. Check system requirements before downloading. Read the terms of service carefully for providers which require membership signup. Some companies will delete inactive accounts and pictures after a specified period of time if you're not a regular customer.
Never rely on promises of permanent online storage. Don't risk losing all your memories. Thousands of photographers who trusted Photoloft.com, PhotoPoint.com and Zing.com learned the hard way. Always keep backups of your digital images. Because all hard drives eventually fail, the best backup is to burn two CD/DVD copies of all photos and store them in separate locations.
The single most important factor determining print quality is resolution or file size. The larger the resolution (height and width in pixels) the more you'll be pleased with your digital photos. Our advice? If an online photo lab doesn't cover recommended file sizes in their help files or FAQs, consider choosing a company who does.
