Paula, the XR-P will not work without batteries. The film advance lever will not move and the shutter will not work. Perhaps the batteries the man tried at the camera store were no good; to be sure you should try some brand-new ones yourself. If the camera still won't work then something else is wrong. Don't be surprised if it doesn't work even though no one has touched it; extended inaction is the absolute worst thing for a camera.
The XR-P is an excellent camera, by the way, at least in my opinion. Hope this helps.
