XR-P cameras do not work without batteries. You can cock the shutter with the advance lever, and then it won't "fire" when you press the shutter release. Thus the camera seems jammed, when in reality it is simply ready to shoot, and cannot do so. The new batteries could have been bad. Or one or more of them could have been put in upside-down.
